The Season Opener

Evander "Vanman" Burns

People say this is the best time of the year because of Christmas, but if you’re an athlete this is the best time of the year because of fall sports! Last night was the season opener for our basketball and soccer team (both boys and girls). The Boys JV soccer team and Varsity both lost in Silverado. JV started out the game with a 2-1 lead with goals from Guilermo Jimenez and Christian Hernandez. (Assists from David Griego and Guilermo Jimenez). They ended up losing the game in the second half 2-5. The varsity team lost 8-1 with Dominic Hernandez scoring the lone goal. The Aztec soccer team looks to bounce back on Thursday against Granite High School.

The Varsity Boys basketball team also wasn’t able to pull out a win as they lost to Silverado 52-66. Christian Taylor had 16 points, while Evander ”Vanman” Burns had 25. Though he had a great scoring night, we ended the night with two technical fouls and would be ejected from the game. Girls Basketball also lost 41-51 with Inaya Paopao scoring 13, and the leading scorer was Imahre Paopao. Both Boys and Girls look to play Granite Hills High School in their second game of the season.
