There's a New Captain in Town
Out with the old, and in with the new. A few weeks ago, 15 year-old dancer and track-runner Harriet Sherwin got offered the position as the new captain of mock trial. In case you’re not aware, mock trial is “basically competitive teams from different high schools, where they play out an entire courtroom and jury. Teams are made up of prosecution teams and defense teams. Each person on the school team practices and perfects their roles,” as stated by Harriet.
When asked how long she has been involved in mock trial, Sherwin replied that this is her first year in mock trial, which is why she was so “shocked and honored [by the offer for captain-ship]”.
According to Sherwin, the current captain, Michael Edward, is “great at leading others.” She also expressed that Michael “has made mock trial great, and I hope to continue to make it as great as he has.” She also stated, when asked what it means to be captain of mock trial, “Captain of mock trial isn’t very different from being a captain for a sports team. The captain doesn’t exactly have a special role necessarily. They enforce moral and self motivation among the team. You have to be able to communicate with your team. It’s just like leading a sports team, except in a courtroom.”
“I legitimately didn’t expect to become the captain. I didn’t join with the intention to become captain on any terms. But when I was offered the role, it was special and shocking,” was her reply when asked how it feels to be captain.
This past year, the case for mock trial has been on a murder case based around a political rally. The defendant, Wendy Rubio portraying Casey Davidson, was accused of killing Alex Thompson. The rally it was based on was called ‘The O’Cannity Speech Rally’.
So next time you see Harriet Sherwin, know that you’re seeing the new mock trial captain!
