The Government has now been closed for over a month
The third government shutdown of 2018 began on Saturday December 22nd shutting down some state parks and leaving many without services such as maintenance. As well as closing many other government services including law enforcement, IRS, national funding for food stamps and programs for survivors of domestic violence, stalking and sexual assault. As well as leaving 800,000 government employees without a paycheck many of whom live paycheck to paycheck. Both sides are refusing to compromise.
Republicans refusing to reopen the the government until they can secure funding for their border wall. A wall that Donald Trump has said is to keep Americans safe. Apparently to him safety means cutting funding employees at the the F.B.I., the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Bureau of Prisons, Customs and Border Protection, the Coast Guard, the Secret Service, and more.
Both sides are currently refusing to come to a compromise. The Democrats are refusing to reach a deal until the government reopens and Republicans refusing to reopen the government util a deal is reached securing 5 billion dollars in funding for the border wall.
This is the fourth time the government has been shutdown over the past six years. The last time a shutdown was this long was 2013 when the government was closed for 17 days following the senate’s inability to come to a compromise on the affordable care act. Which finally ended when republicans finally backed down. However the chances of either side backing down at this point seem slim. With a stubborn, egotistical president Donald Trump.
