It’s official Bryce Harper is no longer a Washington National. The 26-year-old, home-run-hitting outfielder signed a contract last week that will keep him with the Phillies for 13 years. On Friday, March 1, 2019 the Phillies confirmed a deal for Bryce Harper. Bryce Harper is an American professional right fielder. Harper played for the Washington Nationals from 2012 to 2018. On Friday the Philadelphia Phillies announced the 13 year, $330million signing Bryce Harper. This leaves people asking are the Phillies in over their heads? After Middleton stated in November that the Phillies were expecting to spend “stupid”money in the offseason, it came as no surprise that they emerged with Harper on a record-setting contract. And Middleton referenced his famous November declaration on Saturday, asking, “Does this look like stupid money?” Why did Harper pick the Phillies? Harper was asked by many people “why he took the deal? The Phillies were not even the first offer for him”. He could’ve taken a deal for 4 or 5 years, because it paid a lot, but that is not what he wanted. Harper wanted a contract with no trade clauses. He wanted a contract that would “carry him through the rest of his career”. He wanted his kids and family to grow in Philadelphia together. He wanted a place where he could call his “home”. Harper went on to say that another big factor for his decision was his religion (Harper is LDS). He thought and prayed for his decision and wanted nothing but the best for his wife and his kids. He didn’t want his wife and kids to keep moving around place to place, and as said before he wanted a deal that would “carry him through the rest of his career”.
