Barstow High School Sports
At Barstow High School we have many sports, currently we have football and volleyball in action. On Thursday August 22 we had our first Freshman and Junior Varsity game, sadly freshman and JV both lost. Following that Friday was our first Varsity football game. Sadly, our varsity lost 35-0, their expectations were to stay healthy and put up a good fight against a good team. Curtis Mitchell is our football director for varsity and had to say his favorite things about coaching at BHS is coaching their kids from their freshman year to their senior year and watching them grow. Mr Mitchell says “ the football team has a huge part in school spirit and the town gets behind their team.” The football coaches along with any coach at BHS stress academics on the athlete because without good grades you are not allowed to play. In football the scholarships you could get is a full ride and academics to play sports. Mr Mithell would describe the team as “ a very experienced team and they definitely have a great attitude. They are physically and mentally strong.” Some current strengths are “there is a large freshman group that can help in future years, but on varsity there is not a lot of kids so therefore they kind of have a disadvantage” but they are hopeful for upcoming games. Following all of this we do have an amazing volleyball players known as our Lady Aztecs. The Lady Aztecs coach is Torothy Ili and she has been coaching her entire adult life. She also played volleyball when she was younger when she was about eight or nine. What made her start coaching was “ the love for the game and commitment to teach others to do the same.” Torothy’s favorite things about coaching is making sure that the fundamentals and techniques are done correctly. She had to say that her least favorite things about coaching is “when a person thinks they know it all or when they are not coach-able.” Her expectations are for you to be coach-able, ready to learn, work hard and be a team player. A way to describe the team is that they are still in the building phase considering they just started but they are progressing and learning each day. Some steps she will take to improve the team is to continue to teach the basics of the game and skill sets that will improve the girls. “There are different programs and scholarships but it depends on the skill level that the athlete has as well as their GPA to attend some of the programs. “ How do they feel about upcoming games and who do you think will have a good impact on the game?” They feel pretty good about upcoming games because of the slight improvements during practices, but the whole team will come together and deliver a victory. In the end we have very athletic and amazing sports department with outstanding coaches and you can come out to support your JV or freshman football boys on Thursdays and Fridays for varsity boys, as goes for your Lady Aztecs their games are on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
