Police Raid in Nigeria About ´Baby Factories´
Nigerian police have freed 19 pregnant women from buildings in Lagos, which are referred to as ‘baby factories’. The raid happened on September 19th. The women were abducted for the purpose of getting them pregnant and selling the babies for human trafficking. Male babies were sold for $1,400 and female babies were sold for $830. They were lured to Lagos from different parts of the country with the promise of employment. The jobs that they were promised were to be domestic workers. There have been other ‘baby factories’ in the past. There were many more raids last year and the police rescued 160 babies, but during the most recent raid they rescued four babies. The rescued girls and women were aged between 15 and 28 years old.
Instead of getting the jobs that they were promised, the women were held against their will in the properties and forced to have babies. Their money and phones were taken from them so they couldn’t escape. They were forced to stay on the property until they gave birth, then once they gave birth, they would get paid and be able to leave. ‘Baby factories’ are very common in Nigeria, but mostly in Lagos. The police arrested two women which were the untrained nurses, but the woman in charge of the whole thing is on the run. The two nurses were aged 40 and 54 years old. The woman in charge of the whole operation is Madam Oluchi and she has five children of her own. Some of the women were kidnapped, while the others were promised jobs and lured to the locations. Some other women were told that there was a place where they sold babies and they went voluntarily. The rescued girls, women, and babies have been rehoused and are being rehabilitated.
