Trump Administration is Expanding the Travel Ban
The Trump administration is expected to announce an expansion of the travel ban, one of the President’s signature policies, which is known by critics to ban Muslims from the United States. One of the first things that Donald Trump did while in office was sign the travel ban. Signing the ban caused chaos at airports and eventually landed in the Supreme Court. The updated ban will include six new countries, but it has sparked controversy because it’s expected to target Afican countries. The administration says that the travel ban is important to national security.
The current policy restricts entry from seven countries, which are Iran, Libya, Somalia, Syria, Yemen, North Korea, and Venezuela. The new rules could limit certain immigration visas from the new countries that are getting added to the ban. This rule could also mean that it’s going to create a partial immigration ban. The State Department announced a warning not to travel to China due to the logistical disruptions and access to health care. Trump confirmed that he’s planning on adding new nations to the ban, but he won’t reveal which ones.
The goal of the travel ban is to bring governments into compliance by using the power of access to the United States. Democratic lawmakers have denounced the ban and pushed against the administration’s argument that the ban is only for national security purposes. Last year, Democrats introduced the “No Ban Act” in the House and Senate to overturn the ban, but it’s not expected to pass the GOP controlled Senate.
