Water Pollution

Water pollution is something that shouldn't ever exist. It is the contamination of a body of water, and it destroys ecosystems, plant life, and physical habitat. It is caused by trash and chemicals being dumped into the ocean or any general body of water.

We dump oil in the ocean. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, “about 1.3 million gallons of petroleum are spilled into U.S. waters from vessels and pipelines in a typical year”.  Oil spills that happen in the water leaves a shiny substance that makes it impossible for animals to survive in the water.

Oil destroys the insulating ability in mammals with fur, like sea otters and the water resistance in a bird's feathers exposing them to the harsh elements. Without the ability to keep warm and repel water, these birds and mammals can die of hypothermia.

Oil cannot be poured into the ocean because if it is constantly poured into the ocean, then sea otters become endangered then the underwater ecosystem will perish.  Sea otters protect kelp underwater, then while the kelp is protected, then the aquatic species that live in the kelp forests will no longer have a home to live in. Then they would probably eventually become endangered.

They will die off possibly cutting off some of our food supply and making it hard for seafood businesses to continue serving fish who could possibly go endangered due to the oil being poured into the water.

Seagulls play a rather large role in the ecosystem. They eat insects, fish, crustaceans, and eggs in the ocean. By doing so, they keep the populations in check, by playing the predator and prey in the ecosystem.

The next thing to talk about is trash in the ocean. Trash in open water such as lakes and rivers. Trash can travel from a river all the way to an ocean, then killing animals. It washes up on shore because of ocean currents. It makes our beaches look filthy when the garbage  washes up on shore, birds tend to eat it, and fish eat it when it's in the water.

Then concentrates toxic chemicals into their tissues and filling their stomachs making them starve. Then those fish that were killed by the toxins in the garbage which killed them, stay with them. Then we, the people, eat those polluted fish and become ill.

In conclusion, oil kills sea mammals, and sea birds. Trash kills sea mammals, and sea birds too, so dumping things in the ocean not only harmful to their environment, but also to ours.
